I have lost entire afternoons to a storm cell that never actually reaches the site but sits close enough on radar that nobody wants to be the one holding a steel purlin above their head.

What happens during that downtime tells you something about how a crew actually operates, and it is rarely nothing.

The delay nobody schedules around

A wind speed threshold for safe crane operation is a hard stop, not a judgment call, and once that threshold is crossed the whole crew is idle until conditions improve, sometimes for twenty minutes and sometimes for the rest of the day. Smart foremen plan low wind, ground level tasks as a fallback, but there is only so much ground prep to stretch across an unpredictable delay.

Once the ground tasks run out, the crew ends up in whatever covered space is available, usually a half enclosed section of the building itself or a job trailer if one is on site.

Cards, phones, and the occasional radio debate

Card games are the default on most crews I have worked with, partly because they need no equipment beyond a deck someone keeps in a truck. Phones handle most of the rest, and a fair amount of that phone time goes toward following odds and scores on sites like jemputhoki, which comes up often enough in break trailer conversation that it is clearly a normal part of how a lot of guys pass a delay.

Radio debates about the game itself round out the rest, usually louder and more opinionated than the card game happening ten feet away.

Why this actually matters for scheduling

A foreman who tracks how much time weather delays actually cost over a season, rather than treating each one as an isolated inconvenience, builds a much more realistic project timeline for the next bid. I have seen contractors quote a steel erection timeline based on ideal conditions and then eat the cost of every weather day out of their own margin, when a more honest buffer built into the original bid would have covered it.

Making the downtime less wasted

A covered, heated or at least dry staging area near the build site turns a total loss of a delay into at least a productive planning session, whether that means reviewing the next day's lift plan or catching up on paperwork that usually gets pushed to the end of the week. It is a small investment compared to what an idle crew costs per hour.

How experienced foremen actually call it

The best foremen I have worked alongside do not wait for a hard rule to force the stoppage call, they watch the radar and the crew's body language together and pull people down before conditions technically require it. Calling it five minutes early costs a little productivity. Calling it five minutes late, with a crane boom already extended in rising wind, is the kind of decision that gets reviewed in an incident report rather than a schedule update.

That judgment gets built from experience, but a written threshold policy, reviewed with the whole crew before the job starts rather than improvised in the moment, removes the pressure on any one person to make a borderline call alone.

What separates a good delay day from a wasted one

Crews that treat a weather delay as genuinely unplanned time tend to waste more of it than crews that go into the day already knowing what the fallback plan looks like. A pre-agreed list of ground level, low wind tasks, decided the night before rather than improvised once the wind picks up, keeps a delay from becoming a full lost day even when the primary work has to stop. The card games and phone scrolling still happen once that list runs out, but a shorter list to run through means a shorter stretch of pure downtime before something productive fills the gap.
